Poppy demonstrates strong emotional ambitions towards the subject of the song, which is unusual because she shows little emotion in her YouTube videos.

Little individual reviews followed the release of Altar, as the track was mostly overshadowed by the previous two "Bubblebath" hits "Money" and "Lowlife". However, Tyler Peterson of UQMUSIC stated in a review that "Money" and "Altar" in particular were "retro-bangers".
Trivia
- Along with "American Kids", it is one of two songs on Bubblebath to not have an official music video.
- The song's second verse features a brief reggae beat similar to that heard in "Lowlife".
- It is speculated that this song refers to Titanic Sinclair's previous project, Mars Argo. The lines "I know that she has a gun, it's an emotional one" could be referencing her controversial video, "Everybody Wants It All".
- This is the shortest song on "Bubblebath", being 2:40 long.
