Theme
"Am I A Girl?" is about Poppy questioning her identity, showing signs of androgyny and gender fluidity. Poppy expresses that she is confused about her gender, saying that she sometimes feels feminine or masculine, and that she does not want to be called a male or a female. Despite this, she seems to want to be a girl.
The song also discusses gender dysphoria, a condition in which a person experiences distress due to their assigned sex not matching their gender identity. The condition usually causes a person anxiety about their body; Poppy describes people misgendering her as a trigger to her dysphoria, as it causes her to stay awake at night.
